DEER FARMING IN BENELUX

by Paul Audenaerde

ABÉC, Association Benelux pour Éleveurs de Cervides, represents Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. There are 60 members of ABÉC from Belgium, 8 from The Netherlands. The number of deer on farms in Belgium is between 1000 and 1100 hinds. Officially, 1485 persons are known as owners of deer (Ministry of Agriculture). We have exact figures of the number of deer kept on 55 Belgian farms and 6 from The Netherlands.

In Belgium: 55 farms

Red Deer hinds -

between 10 and 20 hinds on 15 farms

between 20 and 40 hinds on 10 farms

> 100 hinds on 4 farms

The rest can be considered small hobby farms but there are 2 finishers without hinds.

Fallow Deer -

> 100 does on 2 farms (non-member)

Many parks with a few does (non-members)

In The Netherlands:

Red Deer hinds -

4 farms with between 20 and 40

3 farms with > 100 hinds

The rest are small farms or parks.

Fallow Deer -

Only hobby farms with small parks.
